My community is Kävlinge in south Sweden. Mostly an agricultural area in the most fertile part of Sweden. Historically wealthy because of the good agriculture. (Now the proximity of Copenhagen is more important). The yields are high, higher than ever. 10 tons of wheat and 60 tons of sugar beet for example.
What is the importance of agriculture today? I summed it up for a community workshop. 7000 hectares of crop production, annual sale value about SEK 70 million. That means about SEK 2000 per inhabitant, not much more than a day´s salary on good job.
And this should be an agricultural community! It is an illustration of the efficiency of the agricultural production and the low prices.
Economically agriculture is unimportant – but cut it off …..
